Arched frames

Finished Product, Uncategorized, Work in progress

Last week we installed 3 arched sash windows we made to suit a home where the originals were rotting away. The original frames have 3mm float glass, the new ones are glazed with 6.5 hush laminate glass. The originals were proper boxframe sash windows; using weights and pulleys. The new ones use tensioned spiral balances to operate. We added flyscreens. Apart from that, pretty much like-for-like replacement. Took 2 full days to install, first one in the rain 🙂

As you can see the frames are rotting out. The sashes are unable to open – wedged shut as they fall out of square and swell up as they get damp. Thin 3mm float glass. The inside bullnose sills and linings are fine, and so to keep as much of the original as possible (and to save cost) we left the inside alone. Remember nothing is square, and the client will render the outside, like it was originally.

First frame fitted, sashes about to be hung. Note internal lining and bullnose sill are kept.

Both side frames fitted, middle original still there…note the original arcatraves around the edge are flat, the client has new ones for us to fit.

Remember, nothing is square, outside render will seal. Our frames are square so sashes work. once the render is in and all painted, it will not be seen

All done with new arcatraves, but keeping the bullnose sills and linings. changed from 3mm float to 6.5 hush laminate glass. no painting/raw frame – painting by others once we go.

Convert window to french doors – wallcut

Finished Product

On Wednesday we made a wall cut and removed an aluminium window. Added a meranti doorframe with sill and pair of rebated doors.

Client will render edges and add bricks under the sill when ready (has a pipe underneath with a tiny rustleak that needs to be fixed first).

We were sent to McLaren Vale for this job. Insurance. A flash flood had swept down the cellar and destroyed the existing doors. We made new ones, and new doorframe jambs. Installed using the existing arched doorframe head, and a few tweaks on the curves on the doors we had made at our factory.

Back for 2020

Finished Product, Uncategorized, Work in progress

Well we have been back to work after the Christmas break – George and I since Jan 8th, and the rest of our staff on the 23rd.

Whilst I have been uploading more pictures through Instagram, I must admit I’ve been a bit lax on our website here.  Here are some of the things we have been up to – I could post a lot more, but I need to get back to glazing some sashes.

here is hoping to a successful and happy 2020 for all.

Some cedar casement windows complete and ready to be picked up

here is the new window, western red cedar.

Scissor winders + stays and latches for the hardware.

Here you can see one of the other windows, internal view. Notice the scissor winder hardware. Top panels of glass obtained from the wonderful team at the Glass Emporium, as per clients request.

In our factory, we are running up door stiles for assembly. Notice; full timbers (not blocks glued together with a veneer) and mortice + tennon joins. In the background you can see the solid 150×50 EX WRC timber pack which is how it all starts out.
